Summertime is a time for fun and relaxation – but it’s also important to remember that your baby needs some essentials while on vacation. Here are six kinds of items you’ll want to pack in your suitcase before hitting the beach or the pool.
#1: A Ready to Go Diaper Bag
Diaper Bag
At home, you might be able to get away with just using a purse or backpack, but when you’re out and about with your little one, you’ll need something specifically designed to hold all of your baby’s things.
A good diaper bag should have plenty of compartments for organization, as well as a place to put a changing pad. You’ll also want something that can be easily carried, so choose straps that won’t dig into your shoulders. Our favorite diaper bag is the Jujube Million Pockets Deluxe Backpack. It has everything you need and more, plus it comes in some super cute designs.
Changing Pad
You might be able to find a place to change your baby at the beach or pool, but it’s always better to be prepared. A small changing pad can easily fit into your diaper bag and will give you a clean, comfortable place to change your little one.
Diapers and Wipes
Of course, you’ll need diapers and wipes no matter where you go with your baby. Pack more than you think you’ll need, as accidents can happen – especially when there are new surroundings to explore.
It’s also a good idea to bring along some diaper rash cream, just in case your baby’s skin becomes irritated.
#2: Feeding On the Go
If you’re breastfeeding, it’s important to pack a few essentials to make sure you’re comfortable and have everything you need while you’re away from home.
Nursing Cover
A nursing cover is a must-have for any breastfeeding mom. It provides privacy and helps keep your baby cool while they nurse. We recommend the Udder Covers Nursing Cover, which is made from a lightweight and breathable material. You can also use a swaddle or light blanket as a makeshift nursing cover if you’re in a pinch.
Nursing Pads
Nursing pads are essential for any breastfeeding mom, especially if you’re away from home. They help keep your clothes dry and provide a layer of protection between your skin and your bra. We recommend Lansinoh’s Disposable Nursing Pads, which are super absorbent and have a leak-proof barrier.
Breast Pump
If you’re pumping breast milk while you’re away from home, be sure to pack your breast pump in your bag. All of our Crane Baby double electric breast pumps feature a soft 3-D cushion technology that reduces discomfort. They’re also rechargeable and super portable, with dust shield covers so you don’t have to worry about them getting dirty while on the go.
Storage Bags
You’ll need a place to store your breast milk while you’re away from home. Be sure to pack storage bags in your bag so you can easily transport your milk. We recommend our Crane Baby storage bags, which are specifically designed for storing and freezing breast milk. They come in a pack of 30 and have multiple adaptors to fit any breast pump. If you don’t have access to a fridge or freezer while out, be sure to pack some ice packs or a to-go cooler!
#3: Sun Protection
The most important baby essential for summertime is sun protection. A baby’s skin is much thinner and more delicate than an adult’s, so it’s important to keep them covered. The last thing you want to deal with on a fun summer trip is a baby with a sunburn! Make sure to pack baby sunscreen, hats, and swim shirts to keep your little one’s skin safe from harmful UV rays.
Sunscreen
When buying sunscreen for your baby, be sure to get one that is SPF 30 or higher and is water-resistant. Apply sunscreen to your baby’s skin 15-30 minutes before going outside, and reapply every two hours – or more often if they’re swimming or sweating. Find one that is made specifically for babies, not just your run-of-the-mill sunscreen. Sunscreens that are specifically made for babies are usually fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, and have added vitamins and minerals that are beneficial for your baby’s delicate skin. We recommend Tubby Todds Mineral Sunscreen or Babyganics Sunscreen for your little one.
Hats & Swim Shirts
A good baby sun hat is essential for protecting your little one’s head and face from the sun. Swim shirts are also a great way to keep your baby’s skin covered while they’re enjoying the water. Choose a hat that has a wide brim and is made from a breathable fabric like cotton. For swim shirts, look for ones that are UPF 50+ and made from quick-drying material. We love Flap Happy Sun Hats. They have a ton of different styles and patterns, with adjustable chin straps, neck coverage, and wide brings so your baby can be protected and adorable. When looking for swim shirts, find one that is loose-fitting and has a high neck to protect your baby’s chest, back, and shoulders. We recommend Hannah Anderson’s Rash Gaurd Suits which block 97% of UV Rays and are made from recycled materials.
Baby Sunglasses
While baby sunglasses might seem like a frivolous purchase, they actually serve an important purpose. They help protect your baby’s eyes from the sun’s harmful rays, and can also help reduce glare. Look for a pair that has 100% UV protection and is comfortable for your baby to wear. We recommend Be Baby Solo sunglasses, which have a soft and flexible frame that is adjustable so they can grow with your child.
#4: Water Safety Items
While spending time in the water is a great way to beat the heat, it’s important to take precautions to ensure your baby’s safety.
Floatation Device
If your baby is under the age of one, you should always keep them within arm’s reach while they’re in the water. A floatation device can help provide peace of mind while you’re enjoying the pool or beach with your baby. Look for one that is made from a comfortable and durable material, and that will fit your baby snugly. We recommend the SwimWays Baby Spring Float Activity Center, which has a sun canopy and interactive toys to keep your baby entertained.
Life Jacket
If you’re planning on spending time on a boat or near open water, it’s important to have a life jacket for your baby. Look for one that is U.S. Coast Guard-approved and fits snugly around your baby’s chest. We recommend the STEARNS Infant Puddle Jumper Hydroprene Life Jacket, which has adjustable waist and leg straps to ensure a comfortable and secure fit.
Water Shoes
If you’ll be spending time near the water, it’s a good idea to pack a pair of water shoes for your baby. Water shoes help protect your baby’s feet from sharp shells and rocks, and can also provide traction on slippery surfaces. We recommend Carter’s Water Shoes, which are made from a soft and flexible material that is comfortable for your baby to wear. They also come in a variety of different patterns and fun colors.
#5: Drying Off & Staying Cool
Once you’re out of the water, it’s important to help your baby stay cool and dry.
Towels
Pack several towels in your bag so you can dry off your baby after a swim. Choose a soft, absorbent towel that is big enough to wrap around your baby. Our Crane Baby hooded towels are made from 100% cotton and are super soft, absorbent, and come in a variety of cute designs.
Muslin Swaddle
A muslin swaddle can be used as a towel, a blanket, or even a privacy shield while you’re breastfeeding. They’re lightweight and breathable, making them perfect for summertime. Our Crane Baby swaddles, which come in a variety of colors and patterns, are made from natural cotton muslin and roll up easy to throw in your beach bag.
Baby Powder
Baby powder can help absorb moisture and keep your baby’s skin cool and dry. We recommend Burt’s Bee’s Dusting Powder, which is made from cornstarch and is gentle enough for babies’ sensitive skin.
Wet Bag
A wet bag is a must-have for any summertime activity with your baby. It’s perfect for storing wet clothes, swim diapers, and towels. We recommend Baby Goal Wet Dry Bags, which are made from a durable and waterproof material.
#6: All Things Comfort
Comfort is key when you’re away from home, especially with a baby. Be sure to pack a few comfort items for both you and your little one.
Blanket
A blanket is a must-have for any baby, whether you’re at home or on vacation. It’s perfect for cuddling, napping, and playing. Our collections feature all kinds of blankets, from velvety soft textures to beautifully quilted pieces, all made from a soft and natural material. Our 6-layer muslin blankets are lightweight, compact, and come in a variety of colors.
Pacifier
A pacifier can be a lifesaver for both you and your baby. It helps soothe your baby and can be a great way to comfort them when they’re away from home. We recommend the Philips Avent Soothie Pacifier, which is designed to comfort your baby.
Toys
Toys are a great way to keep your baby entertained while you’re on the go. Be sure to pack a few of your baby’s favorite toys in your bag so they can play while you’re on the road. Soft plush toys can be a lifesaver for babies and toddlers on long car rides or plane trips, as they help keep them entertained and can be a great comfort item.
